2026 marks the 85th Anniversary of the German Air Raids on Northern Ireland.
Background
Back in September 2023, Nigel Henderson and Michael Nugent of History Hub Ulster were speakers at the Conolly Lecture organised by the Irish Military Heritage Foundation (IMHF). The theme of the event was the ex-servicemen’s houses built at Killester and other parts of Ireland.
During Nigel’s talk, he referred to the German bombing of part of Dublin during the Second World War.
In April 2024, Wesley Bourke of IMHF contacted Nigel with a view to producing a series of short videos relating to German air raid sites in Belfast and Dublin, and the project was later extended to cover the other parts of Northern Ireland attacked by the Luftwaffe.
It took a while for the funding application to be approved, and Wesley and a cameraman came up to Belfast in August 2024 to secure footage at various locations in Belfast.
The outcome of the project was 13 videos that are available on History Hub Ulster’s YouTube channel and promoted on Facebook to mark the 85th Anniversary of the air raids on Northern Ireland.
